Building, Wiring, Plumbing, Propane, and Wood Stove Permits Information
Franklin County Cooperative Inspection Program
BUILDING: The Massachusetts State Building Code now requires that a Building Permit be obtained before the start of any construction be it a house or outbuilding, new or alteration of existing structure, whether by owner or contractor. A Building Permit is also required for the installation of any solid fuel burning appliance (wood or coal stove or furnace). Applications for these permits and information on specifications required by the State for such work can be obtained from the Franklin County Cooperative Inspection Program (FCCIP) at 413-774-3167 (Ext. 113 Jim Hawkins - Building Commissioner) ( - Local Building Inspector) or www.frcog.org (see Inspections and Permits)
WIRING: If you are planning any electrical circuitry work, a Permit to Perform Electrical Work, or wiring permit, must be obtained from the Electrical Inspector Tom McDonald: 413-774-3167 Ext. 115 or www.frcog.org (see Inspections and Permits)
PLUMBING/GAS: If you are planning any plumbing work, a Permit To Do Plumbing is required. Contact Plumbing/Gas Inspector Andy French: 413-774-3167 Ext. 112 or www.frcog.org (see Inspections and Permits)
These permits are mandated by the State for the protection of its citizens.
Contractors should be aware of these regulations and owners should see that the proper permits are obtained by them. These permits require filling out certain forms and inspection by the Town Inspectors at certain stages of the performance of the work.
An effort has been made to keep the enforcement of these codes in the Town so a resident does not end up dealing with a bureaucracy. Please realize the inspector's only desire is to help you fulfill state requirements.
